Colette Beland, Development Director, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Cystic fibrosis is a rare, genetic disease that progressively limits the ability to breath. Only 30,000 Americans have cf but 1 in 31 Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective gene. The defective cf gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs and the pancreas, and some with cf say it feels like they are breathing through a straw.
