Food Packing for Haiti
Your two hands are capable of more than you think. When banded together with hundreds of other individuals, in just two hours, your two hands can make a difference through the Food Packing for Haiti event.

Palm Beach Gardens – Over 500 participants are sought to help pack food for the second annual Food Packing for Haiti event scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2015, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and School. Food Packing for Haiti is an annual service event where people of all ages pack a simple rice and bean meal fortified with protein, vitamins, and minerals to be sent to hungry children in Haiti.  Together with partner parishes, Church of the Advent, Palm City and St. Paul’s, Delray Beach; and Kids Care, an Outreach Inc. program; St. Mark’s goal is to raise funds and recruit participants to pack over 50,000 meals!

“Over 550 people joined together to support last year’s inaugural outreach effort,” said the Rev. Sanford Groff, associate rector at St. Mark’s. “The energy in the gym was palpable, and it was clear the spirit was at work.”

“Last year, we all came together to help the most vulnerable children of Haiti,” said Michaela Kennedy, development director and food packer. “Between the friendly competition between tables to pack the most food, the lively music playing to keep the energy up, and organizers cheering us on to reach our goal to pack over 50,000 meals – it was truly one of the most joyful outreach events I’ve ever been a part of!”

One of the most important ways to get involved is to help pack the food. Registration is open at http://www.foodpackingforhaiti.org. Registration fees are as follows:  adults ($20), children under 12 ($10), and groups ($150 for a table of 10). Participants are requested to register for a two-hour shift. There will be five, 2-hour shifts beginning at 9 a.m. with the last shift starting at 11 a.m.  Ten food packers per table assist in the process of measuring scoops of dry goods (beans, rice, soy, etc.) into bags, and then heat-sealing and boxing the prepared bags. At the end of the day, boxes are loaded into a truck and driven to the port, where they are then sent to Haiti and distributed to families in need.

In addition to participating in this outreach, individual financial support and corporate sponsorship is encouraged. St. Mark’s thanks its lead sponsors, DHL Express; Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center; Keller, Keller & Caracuzzo, P.A.; EDS Air Conditioning; and Stonegate Bank; as well as the following corporate sponsors who have contributed to date: Dunkin’ Donuts; Holyfield & Thomas; Natural Medicine Clinic; Nozzle Nolen Pest Solutions; and Palm Beach Karting. Checks should be made payable to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with a notation of “Haiti” on the memo line. Mail to St. Mark’s at 3395 Burns Road, Attention:  Development Office, Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410, or drop off at the church office in advance of the event.
