Kravis Center for the Performing Arts promises a dynamic playbill of award-winning shows, world-class talents and powerful performances that will generate enthusiastic standing ovations from our discerning audience members of every age and demographic.
“Our 2017-2018 season will be particularly exciting,” says Judith Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer. “With such a well-rounded roster of performances, the Kravis Center provides something for everyone and this season once again reflects our ongoing commitment to offer programming that is as broad and diverse as the various communities we serve.”
“The Kravis Center’s Board of Directors, staff and volunteers all continue to be focused on and faithful to our mission, which – in addition to presenting world-class entertainment – also includes offering arts education programs for all-ages, providing a home for local and regional arts organizations to showcase their work, and offering a comfortable, safe and state-of-the-art gathering place for our entire community,” she adds.

In addition to performances in the 2,195-seat Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. Concert Hall, the Kravis Center will present a diverse array of drama, music and dance in the intimate 300-seat Marshall E. Rinker, Sr. Playhouse, and the flexible 300-seat Helen K. Persson Hall.

Designed to enhance the entire experience of visiting the Kravis Center, Beyond the Stage activities complement the main attraction and are free to ticket holders. These activities include:
Beyond the Stage – Pre-concert and performance talks: A talk, offering insights into the music and musicians will precede each Regional Arts concert. For the eighth season, these explorations for the classically curious will be hosted by Sharon McDaniel, Regional Arts Programming Associate, and former music critic for The Palm Beach Post.
These Beyond the Stage talks start at 6:45 pm (for 8 pm concerts and shows) and at 12:45 pm (for 2 pm concerts and matinee performances) in The Picower Foundation Arts Education Center.
For select Kravis On Broadway and dance related shows, the Beyond the Stage pre and post-performance talks will be hosted by Steven Caras, the well-known former New York City Ballet dancer and dance photographer, who also co-chairs the Kravis Center’s popular Lunch and Learn series with Lee Wolf.
Beyond the Stage – Musical presentations: Some 8 pm concerts will be preceded by music in the Dreyfoos Hall lobby performed by schools, community groups, or Florida artists 45 minutes before concerts or performances.

Tony Award-winning poet Lemon Andersen's new solo work, When Aliens Fall from the Sky, is a performance art piece comprised of 13 poems/journeys from real citizens, both documented and not, who live in what he calls "the bone marrow of our nation." The Brooklyn-born actor, who first garnered national attention in Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam, weaves rhymes and speaks a harsh but witty truth through these complex characters to shine a spotlight on America's identity crisis.

At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater lays DakhaBrakha, a world music quartet that plumbs the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms. The self-described "ethnic chaos" band is accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instruments, including drums, accordion and didgeridoo. The 13th year of the Writers’ Circle will commence on January 8! The concept is to set the literary bar high while keeping the atmosphere friendly and encouraging. The proceedings, run by Julie Gilbert, head of The Writers’ Academy, are conducted with professional exuberance. The focus will be on exercises as well as the writer’s ongoing work, meaning that every member will have a work-in-progress when we begin, as well as be eager to explore new levels. Each writer will receive a 20-minute discussion by the group when their ongoing project is ready for feedback. Writers will receive a private evaluation of their work from Julie Gilbert, who will also lead the discussion.
There are two sessions of the Writers’ Circle. You may register for either the morning or afternoon session. Writers who seek admission to the Writers’ Circle without prior experience in Writers’ Launch, can apply with a submission of ten pages. Email your submission to gumbinner@kravis.org.

Charismatic trumpeter and vocalist Bob Merrill captures the spirit of history’s greatest horn legends, beginning with pioneers Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke through Swing Era stylists. Bebop innovators Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis are followed by post-Bop master Lee Morgan and more, then Merrill closes with classics by Al Hirt, Herb Alpert and Chuck Mangione. Like caviar, New York City Ballet dancer Wendy Whelan was at first an acquired taste. But soon this wiry, angular, one-of-a-kind artist inspired company directors Jerome Robbins and Peter Martins to feature her uniqueness. Whelan’s subsequent rise to Principal Ballerina status coincided with a rapidly growing fan base – an enormous audience who continue to cheer her on to this day. Now fifty, following hip surgery and a glorious farewell at NYCB, Whelan dances on, collaborating with today’s most innovative contemporary choreographers, promoting their important work in the process. Restless Creature, the new, aptly named documentary profiling Whelan’s life, is currently being held-over in theaters across the country. Excerpts will be featured in a revealing, dancer-to-dancer conversation with fellow NYCB alumnus, Steven Caras.

René Silvin was an escort and personal confidant to the aging Duchess of Windsor in Paris in the early 1970s. He infuses this presentation with some of his own encounters with the Duchess as well as a detailed account of her life, her marriage to the Duke and their many travels and adventures—including their ill-advised trip to Nazi Germany in 1937. Julie Gilbert on Robert Redford’s
Ordinary People and His Extraordinary Life
Robert Redford has had an unbeatable career, was a family man, and although he led an extraordinary life, tried to keep his family ‘ordinary’ and far from the spotlight. Ordinary People, a novel by Judith Guest, went from the ‘slush pile’ to Best Seller in 1976. After reading it, Redford requested the rights to make the movie about family depression and disengagement following a tragic event. The film, featuring Mary Tyler Moore, Donald Sutherland, Judd Hirsch, Timothy Hutton and Elizabeth McGovern, was sorrowful and exhilarating through Redford’s unsparing and yet deeply empathetic lens. After the film, Julie Gilbert, head of The Writer’s Academy, will discuss the journey from book to film as well as Redford’s transformation from actor to auteur/director. Ordinary People won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director of 1981.

After a 16-year hiatus in Russian-American relations, the governments of the United States and the Soviet Union cautiously reopened diplomatic presences in Washington and Moscow. Their common fear now was the rise of German fascism. With communism ever spreading, bilateral fears resulted in a protracted Cold War between America and the Soviet Union. Dr. Stephen R. de Angelis, who worked in business for 25 years before returning to Columbia University to earn his doctorate degree in Russian Studies through St. Petersburg University in Russia, will present a slide show along with his discussion. He has written 25 books, including the translations of the Diaries of Nicholas II.

On Noël Coward’s Brief Encounter
Noël Coward’s story of two ordinary people, Laura (Celia Johnson) and Alec (Trevor Howard), was touted as one of the most romantic films of all time by The Guardian. Concert organists David Baskeyfield and Thomas Gaynor will perform music for four-hands and four-feet, including their own transcription of Saint-Saëns’ beloved Carnival of the Animals. Solos will include music of Mozart, Bach, and Liszt, as well as a newly discovered transcription by the legendary Marcel Dupré of a Dukas favorite, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. They will perform on the Kravis Center’s George W. Mergens Memorial Organ.

The astounding life of newspaperman turned playwright, screenwriter and novelist Ben Hecht is explored in The Ben Hecht Show, written and performed by James Sherman. Part comedy and part drama, the solo piece is based on Hecht's books A Guide for the Bedevilled and A Child of the Century. Resplendent with sardonic prose, the show, according to producers, "tells you everything you need to know about show business, Jews and anti-Semites. With jokes."

Gullah originated in West Africa and means "a people blessed by God." And Ranky Tanky translates loosely as "work it" or "get funky"! It's in this spirit that jazz musicians Quentin Baxter, Kevin Hamilton, Charlton Singleton and Clay Ross, with celebrated Lowcountry singer Quiana Parler, perform Gullah music that evolved from the coastal region of South Carolina and Georgia. (A Kravis Center Community Outreach Event In partnership with the Youth Orchestra of Palm Beach County, the School District of Palm Beach County and the Palm Beach County Music Teachers’ Association)
Crossing the threshold from practice to the stage is every music student’s dream, and the Kravis Center has been helping to make that dream a reality for 25 years. Since 1992, after a youth orchestra founder and educators from two Palm Beach County groups collaborated with the Center to create Spotlight on Young Musicians, nearly 20,000 students have performed in Dreyfoos Hall. The eagerly anticipated annual event not only showcases emerging talent but also promotes the excellent music programs within area schools.

It Gets Better

The It Gets Better Project began in 2010 after writer Dan Savage and his husband, Terry Miller, created a YouTube video in which worldwide supporters assured youth who felt bullied that “it gets better.” The grassroots campaign has evolved into a week-long residency in which local students work with It Gets Better representatives, including members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, on anti-bullying, self-image, tolerance and acceptance. Tonight’s presentation includes recorded student material — poems, songs, skits and more — from the It Gets Better program at Compass LGBT Community Center in Lake Worth as well as a live performance by the It Gets Better cast of professional artists.
